Infanticide: The Cost of Apathy

"The Church of England has broken with tradition dogma by calling for doctors to be allowed to let sick newborn babies die.
Christians have long argued that life should preserved at all costs - but a bishop representing the national church has now sparked controversy by arguing that there are occasions when it is compassionate to leave a severely disabled child to die."
(The full article can be read here.)

This so-called Church "dogma" is a core principle of the Bible. Sanctity of life is not merely a teaching endorsed by the Church; it is a teaching established by God. As God's own precious Son spilled His life-blood for the sake of the eternal life of human beings, He declared that we were valuable to Him. These church members could not have missed this very clear teaching.

Too often pious, culture-smart, and sometimes very sincere church members give into apathy. Instead of vigorously defending Scripture, culture is allowed to dictate their decisions. Leonard Ravenhill said, "One of these days some simple soul will pick up the Book of God, read it, and believe it. Then the rest of us will be embarrassed."

We hope to discuss apathy and the importance of a Biblical worldview in future posts. We would love to hear your thoughts on this issue. What do you think about the Church of England's decision? What do you think about the importance of a Biblical worldview in general?

Ugh...sounds like the ancient Greeks and Romans.
Why would they want to revert to paganistic "picking" their children when God is already picking them for them, and perfectly at that??

That is awful! It is no worse than American abortions; it is just following the ungodly principle to its "logical" conclusion. Human life must be protected. As head of the Church of England, I don't think this reflects well on Queen Elizabeth. Is there anything she could have done about it?

This is truly sad, and gross. Life is no longer sacred to the world! The life of a bear would be considered more high quality these days! People considering they have the "right" to take a life, or simply "allow" death, of a helpless child is W.R.O.N.G. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand that! Once you start with society saying its ok to rip a baby's rib from it, and pull it out piece by piece out of the mother, just because the mother has "reasons", the idea of what is "ok" will do nothing but decrease in society! Is this not the end days? Once you say there's no relevance to just -one- helpless soul, you've started sliding down a long slippery slope! You can't say this one should live, and this one shouldn't! This is pure atheism at it's best: No God, No one set or morals, Chaos! So people who have no one to answer to, and NO reason to answer, feel as though life is in their hands to take control of. To see Christians - well possibly Christian, the name is used so lightly these days- adopt these atheistic ideas is SAD! I'm sorry, I just love children, and believe in protecting those that can't protect themselves.

Elizabeth Ellen,
I'm not sure what Queen Elizabeth could have done. (Perhaps one of our British readers could provide some input on this?)
Natalie and Jacqui,
I totally agree. It is horrible to see professing Christians supporting an action that is truly murder.

This shows us what starts to happen when we take only portions of Scripture, or even, disregard it entirely. It shows what happens when we make our own ways and plans. We are all capable of making decisions just like this. Our very hearts are corrupt, which is why we must cling continually to God, knowing that on our own, we are sheep that will go astray. We need His cleansing and purifying blood to make our hearts new.

This reminds me of Proverbs 16:25. We lack the ability to discern right and wrong for ourselves. We need the Holy Spirit to help us. When we start deciding these things apart from God's Word, the consequences are grave.

"There is a way that seems right to a man,
but its end is the way to death." Proverbs 16:25 ESV
